The agency said the decision came at the request of the two states and was granted because the housing stock in those areas has been severely depleted.
The extension does not extend to hurricane evacuees in hotels in Texas, despite calls by the state’s Governor and the mayor of Houston to extend them.
“Unfortunately, families impacted by Katrina must realize that housing in New Orleans will not return to its pre-storm state for some time and it is time for displaced families to locate suitable housing solutions in other locations, including those out of state,” said FEMA Coordinating Officer Scott Wells.
Wells said FEMA officers several programs to assist in relocation.
