BATON ROUGE -- Bolstered by a business group's lobbying campaign for reform of the Orleans Parish Levee Board, the Senate unanimously adopted a proposal Thursday night that would tear down a fragmented and decades-old levee governing system in the New Orleans area in favor of a state board with authority across parish lines.
While the bill by Sen. Walter Boasso, R-Arabi, does not contain all the features its supporters wanted, the measure would create a single state board with responsibility for flood control in East Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard and St. Tammany. The bill would strip that authority from the individual boards.
"We have to protect the people and the politics have to go by the wayside," an emotional Boasso said after the 37-0 vote. [Read more - NOLA]
