Rep. Rick Gallot, D-Ruston, said his bill (House Bill 88) is needed because of hurricanes Katrina and Rita to allow landlords to begin repairs with evacuees scattered across the country. He said the longer repairs are delayed, the more expensive the work becomes.
The legislation was amended to require landlords to photograph the property before disposing of it. Under the legislation, a landlord could throw away a renters' property until June 30. Then the law would become inactive.
The measure, already approved by the House, now awaits debate in the full Senate. - AP
