The Police Department fired another five of the officers who were missing when Hurricane Katrina smashed into New Orleans, bringing to 56 the number who lost their jobs for being AWOL.
Four other officers were suspended, meaning they can return to the force once their suspension ends, spokesman Marlon Defillo said on Thursday. He did not say how long the suspension lasts.
The action came as hearings for the 240 officers that were unaccounted for during the storm continued. Hearings for the officers began Nov. 8. They will take four to six months to complete, acting superintendent Warren Riley said. [Read more - WWLTV]
