NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 1 - Holt Cemetery, one of the poorest and most poorly tended burial grounds in New Orleans, was submerged in floodwater after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city on Aug. 29. Afterward, its markers were left askew, its grasses browned and lifeless.
But it may never have been a sadder place than it was on Tuesday, All Saints' Day, when Roman Catholics here traditionally visit the graves of loved ones and honor the dead.
Last year on this day, Holt was "packed, packed," said Karin Legohn, as she weeded the plot where her grandmother lay. But this morning the only mourners in sight were Ms. Legohn and her mother, Leverne O. McWilliams, who left a red flower in a slender vase in front of her mother's tilted stone.
