SLIDELL, La. -- Traffic on Interstate 10 across Lake Pontchartrain resumed Friday as the state opened one of the twin spans that connects the northshore suburbs with New Orleans.
The major traffic artery was extensively damaged by Hurricane Katrina on Aug. 29. Since the metropolitan area reopened, motorists were routed to the U.S. 11 bridge, resulting in long delays.
Gov. Kathleen Blanco and U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta marked the reopening of one two-lane span to carry two-way traffic with a 50 mph speed limit.
The opening came 15 days before the scheduled Oct. 31 completion date, as Boh Brothers Inc. finished the $30.9 million restoration ahead of time and earned a $1.1 million bonus. [Read more - WWLTV]
