Update 11/23/05: Teacher Debra LaFave pleads guilty, gets no jail time

24 year-old teacher Debra Lafave was back in court this week pleading not guilty to charges that she had sex with a 14 year-old male student.

The Smoking Gun has the prosecutions evidence and Tampa Bay's CBS affiliate WTSP has transcripts and audio of the calls the boy made to the teacher that were taped by police.

Debra Lafave sounds childlike in the conversations. She says, "Ewww, you think I'm weird," when he expresses concern about having sex without a condom. When the student tells her she can come over because his mother is out she says, "Promise... pinky promise."

LaFave's attorney, John Fitzgibbons, said that she will plead insanity. He also said that LaFave has "some profound emotional issues."

I say we should release her after she completes this.

I'm not belittling female sexuality, quite the contrary, when I say that men are more predatory. That is, men are not more sexual, just more prone to aggression, which is associated with sexual violation. Also, men are the penetrator, women the penetratee. So you are comparing apples and oranges.

That said, there are plenty of examples in our own recent history (N. America, Europe) and across anthropology of 13 year olds screwing, and even enjoying it. So to answer your Q: as long as the girl is ok with it (not coerced) and her culture and family are ok with it, all the psychological damage we assume from such a tryst is due to our culturally assigned hangups. If you are biologically capable of sex, having sex is no big deal. It is weird to us here and now when one partner is nubile and the other wrinkled. And we may label other cultures where such unions are sanctioned as oppressive. But recent emphasis on men's violent tendencies makes us too ready to label a young woman as victim, and by association, all youth as asexual victims. And yet our pop culture and hormone-laden foods sexualize kids at ever younger ages. If the lolita complex has exploded it is because of untenable cognitive dissonance.

The boy? Sure he enjoyed it, even if he wasn't 'ready'...hard to rape a dude, cuz there is only one way to get a stiffy- actual arousal. I think this teacher should rotate through every high school in the nation, teaching sex ed- but she better review the condom/STD chapter. That was the only scary part to me, never know where that 24-yr-old cooch has been.
