Electric Eel Used To Power Christmas Tree Lights

An aquarium filled with exotic fish here is using an electric eel to power lights on a Christmas tree.

Each time the electric eel at the Aqua Toto Gifu aquarium touches a copper wire in its tank, it sends power that lights up globes decking a Christmas tree.

Officials expect the "eel Christmas tree" to be a popular attraction for dating couples in the lead-up to Christmas Day, when the tree will be removed.

Electric eels are capable of generating electricity in their bodies. They have notoriously poor eyesight and use electric shocks to stun prey so they can catch and eat them. Article. Via

Rotating House

Tired of the sun glaring on the TV? The hell with closing the blinds and losing that great view, just rotate the house.  The Everingham rotating house is a 24-metre diameter octagon with a 3-metre, 360-degree verandah. The exterior walls are mostly glass and steel, and it has a COLORBOND® roof. The entire structure, weighing approximately 50 tonnes, rotates up to 360-degrees if and when desired, within a 180 degree retainer wall and a 180 degree fixed deck and railing. The concept is the result of nearly a decade of intermittent research, planning and design, and ten months of construction over a two year period consuming all disposable time. The project was completed in March 2006.

The entire design concept has been firmly based on the following principles:

• The cost must not exceed that of a conventional house of the same size and level of appointment;
• The layout and finish must be highly functional;
• The end result must require very little maintenance;
• The house must be white ant proof;
• The rotating aspect must allow the occupants to maximise exploitation of weather conditions, seasonal conditions and outstanding 360-degree views.

How To: make a Matchbox Pinhole Camera

All you need is a matchbox, an empty roll of 35mm film, some new 35mm film, some black tape and a bit of foil!  Directions at alspix stuff

This camera uses 35mm film to provide square images of 24 x 24mm. Using this size means that you can get up to 50 exposures on a standard roll of 36 exposure film.

The USB Hamster Wheel is fun little gizmo to have at the office. Plug it into your USB port, load the software from the CD provided and get typing. As you type, the hamster gets running, spinning the hamster wheel around in the process - the faster you type, the faster he runs. This demented rodent sent shrieks of laughter around the office when we tested it, and is the ultimate parody of modern society.

Hamster Powered Paper Shredder

This Hamster Powered Paper Shredder is a concept by artist Tom Ballhatchet that will be on display in Milan next week. The device works like this: the hamster runs on the wheel, which powers the shredder, which shreds the paper into hamster bedding.
